Intermediate Chinese , When & While Sentence , Taiwan College Life with Mahjong

This lesson covers the subordinating conjunction, when and while. The pattern "當...的時候/dang1...de5 shi2hou4" is used in Mandarin. You can see the same pattern goes on in different sentences that mean different things but other grammatical functions such as progressive 在zai4 and 一直 yi4zhi2 + Verb, are added to elaborate what speaker intends to express.

當Peggy在洗澡 [的時候]， 電話一直在響。[一直 + V. - Keep + V.]

當Peggy在洗澡 [的時候]， 電話在響。

What do the numbers mean in the subtitles? Is it because the letters cannot be written so the numbers are a substitute? e.g. dang1 Peggy zai4 xi3zao3 de5 shi2hou4
