In this series of videos gay activist Jim Burroway talks about attending Focus on the Family and Exodus International's "Love Won Out" conference which promotes "gay curing" or "ex-gay" ministries.
In this segment Jim discusses the narratives for our own lives each person has. Oftentimes when a gay child comes out of the closet parents are left holding a narrative for their child's life that no longer matches reality.

I must say that though I disagree with the "narrative" emphasis I do appreciate the tone and respectful nature of it. Personally I think that anyone with any kind of perceived problem whether it is real or not must be committed to the remedy of that problem. I do not believe the primary remedy in this case is getting a big dose of religion. Sometimes it really cheapens what represents a real option for people who desire to achieve a productive heterosexual lifestyle. People can change.

Excellent video. You get a sense that many parents evaluate how successful their lives have been on the basis of how heterosexual, how parental, and how financially stable their children are. That places a heavy burden on gay and straight kids, as well as on parents.
