I joined this snare line briefly in pre-season. I left before selections were made, got married and became a drum judge. Didn't stay long enough to claim the honour of membership, but I learned tons from a remarkable Tom Float and some kick-ass snare drummers. Oakland had the cleanest drum line ever! Their fanatical practice and sheer willpower banished errors. ALL errors! Other snare lines trembled. If I ever had a regret, it's not staying that whole magnificent year.

I wish I had seen this corps live!

Do people really care what was a hot dog corps and what wasn't? Hell, 35 years later, this sounds amazing. Hell, even if I went to get a hot dog at all during that evening, I wouldn't get it until after the show was over. And I was born LONG after this night.

@scv1981 - I was still in the Oakland Crusaders in 1980 and a couple of my best friends left us and went to Vanguard. I remember the 1980 SCV show - one of the most ground breaking, innovative shows EVER - and I remember hearing all the criticism. SCV was once again ahead of the activity, ahead of their time.
Congrats on marching some great Vanguard years. I loved 81 too!

@sluggger222 I just saw this post. I marched in the corps in 1979 and 1980 so I missed the "glory years" but all my friends had been in the first years of the corps. I don't know about the snares being "tickless" in DCI Finals, but I do know for sure that the tenor drums were tickless for the entire 1977 SEASON!!! All those guys were either still marching or teaching when I was in the corps and everyone used to talk about line.
I never heard anyone talk about them tipping their bus over LOL.

Mark Blandford! That's a name from my very young drum corps past. Bass Drum Stud!

Tom Float taught this line didn't he? I know he did in 77 but what about this line?
That's awesome! Although I found it pretty amusing that the DM was conducting like a pimp...gotta love the 70's!

no Im not kidding. I marched during this time period and competed against them. We referred to them as a hot dog corps. Id rather eat a poison hot dog than to listen to that dred.

Well, you have to give credit, where credit is due. And you can't dispute the fact that they had a good drumline, hot dogs notwithstanding. I think they took 3rd in drums that year. Still hating after all these years? Let it go...
