There are dangerous and fanatical individuals and groups around the world who have been inspired by extreme Islamist ideas, and who will use the techniques of mass terror - the attacks on America and Madrid make this only too clear.

But the nightmare vision of a uniquely powerful hidden organisation waiting to strike our societies is an illusion.

Wherever one looks for this al-Qaeda organisation, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the "sleeper cells" in America, the British and Americans are chasing a phantom enemy.

But the reason that no-one questions the illusion is because this nightmare enemy gives so many groups new power and influence in a cynical age - and not just politicians.

Those with the darkest imaginations have now become the most powerful.

In part one, the programme looked at the origins of the neo-conservatives and the radical Islamists in the 1950s.

The second part of the series examined how the radical Islamists and neo-conservatives came together to defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

  • We in America rarely see such a serious scrutiny to our garbage that we are fed every day

  • That was awesome..

Everything is a matter of perspective I feel and hope that more and more people realise this.

Thank you very much for the time you spent to share this with us.

  • Now the "Islamist" are winning....

  • The best documentry i have seen in years.

  • That film was made 2004 not 7/7/2005

  • This film is obviously a few years old, because a number or radical islamists operating under the banner of al Qaeda have launched attacks against the west in recent years. none were successful,

Some of the glaring omissions in the second half of this documentary make me question the credibility of the whole thing.

  • I've read the criminal charges against the virginia group, and they were doing more than just paintballing. They were preparing for jihad. Some even traveled to Pakistan and fired at Indian troops in the Kashmere. Paintball is also a great way to practice small-unit tactics. That is why the US military uses paint ammo in training.

  • So if I buy health insurance, am I also a lemming to the Insurance industry? Adhering to the precautionary principal?

  • Excellent expose of the neocons, as far as it goes. There seems to be an aspect of being a Tony Blair/George Bush hit piece to this. Let's not forget that these neocons have thoroughly infiltrated *both* parties. Obama has broken every campaign promise: Gitmo: still open for business, Iraq: still there. Afghanistan: ditto. And we have a *new* war. Nothing changed

  • This documentary COMPLETELY MISSED government agencies established or aided "terrorists". Like the underwear bomber, the christmastree bomber, and the WTC bombing.

This documentary COMPLELY FAILED to inspect al-Qaeda as a creation of the intelligence agencies. Gladio is a proven case of intelligence agencies organizing terrorist attacks against civilians and running terrorist cells. Operation Nortwood is a plan to attack civilan and military targets. Operation Ajax were attacks aginst civilians

  • the constant purges of tought criminals was mearly the wiping out of individuals who might possibly commit a crime in the future
