The Sonics were not stolen. They couldn't stay in Seattle because they were the lowest revenue generating franchise in the NBA and the Washington government still refused to pay a dime to renovate Key Arena when Stern asked for a contribution in February 2006 (before Bennett bought the team).
A mid-sized market like Seattle needed to cough up public funding to keep its team, but they gave Stern the middle finger instead.
