Two police officers shot and injured, and a police dog killed in Christchurch

July 13, 2010 - A senior constable was shot in the face, another police officer shot in the leg and a police dog killed when a routine operation became a shooting drama in Christchurch today.

A 51-year-old senior police constable with 32 years experience is in surgery after being shot through the face during the incident and a second "very lucky" 39-year-old constable is in hospital after being shot in the leg.

Canterbury district commander Superintendent Dave Cliff, who was visibly upset, said at a press conference today that the officers were shot inside a house in the Christchurch suburb of Phillipstown after a routine visit to track down a psychiatric patient.

Six-year-old German shepherd police dog, Gage, was also shot and died at the scene.

Police stormed the house on Buccleugh St and took a man - handcuffed with his face covered in blood and his shirt and trousers torn - away in a police car. A second man has also been arrested.

Police say a 34-year-old man is also being questioned.
