  • Great song, great tune. That melody was used by Roy Acuff in his song "Great Speckled Bird" as well as Maybelle Carter's (June Carter Cash's mom) "Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes." I've heard that this melody line, or tune, goes all the way back to the Civil War. It's had many different lyrics written to it.
