A promotional show introducing viewers to the new and returning television shows for the 1961 Fall season on CBS. Each night is hosted by the star of one the shows including Andy Griffith, Rod Serling, and Ed Sullivan.
Just to put in perspective how many years ago this was, Andy Griffith is now 84 years old and the only person mentioned (I think) who is actually still alive. John F Kennedy was President and those who were BORN that year are about to turn 50 years old, which is 14 years older than Andy Griffith was when this was filmed. I know it's all obvious info, but when you think of it, it really puts it into perspective.
As a child I saw the show starring Robert Young and couldn't figure out why it wasn't "Father Knows Best." I was disappointed. However the day was saved with the re-runs.
By the way, every show featured in this 1961-'62 prime-time schedule was telecast in black & white (even "THE ALVIN SHOW", which wasn't seen in color until it was syndicated in the fall of 1965).
"MARSAHAL DILLON" {Tuesdays, 7:30-8pm(et)} was the reissue title for the first six seasons of the half-hour version of "GUNSMOKE" (1955-'61), which lasted on the network until 1964, after which those episodes went into syndication while the first-run hour-long "GUNSMOKE" episodes continued on Saturday nights. Dick Van Dyke moved to Wednesdays in January 1962..apparently, the "DOBIE GILLIS" portion of the preview [which should have appeared at 7:40] is missing from this print.
And I'd like to add that, in the 1961-'62 season, weeknights at 6:45pm(et)[7:15pm in certain cities, including New York] was the network's 15 minute evening newscast, "DOUGLAS EDWARDS WITH THE NEWS". Edwards was succeeded by "THE CBS EVENING NEWS WITH WALTER CRONKITE" in April 1962.
That's Carol Burnette in the Genie costume.
