Let's take a look at one way to apply sweeps and arpeggios (ala Protest the Hero). Playing through a simple chord progression we can outline the harmony of those by sweeping through them, in turn creating a part or section that is much more interesting all around.

Check out the S.T.E.M. song Bounce to hear this example in it's original context (link is below in video responses)

  • How much did that schecter cost? Was it custom?

  • Hey man love your videos can you do a video on teaching how to sweep

  • @Destrukto184 I'll keep that in mind thanks! Just remember, sweeping is a glorified 'rake'. Practice raking groups of strings (dead notes,in both directions). It will help in the long run

  • hi, thanks for the lesson. what monitors are you using? the ones on your desk.

  • I've got to say that the thing I really like about your playing is that it isn't the typical "I'm a douche bag and have to disguise my inadequacy by playing absurdly fast and technical". You actually approach it from a compositional perspective, which I don't fully understand because I'm self taught, like "I listen to the noise and find interesting patterns of harmony and dissonance that my western ear easily identifies". I can hear what you're doing and you do a great job conveying ideas.

  • Just like to drop a line and let you know you've really helped me come along as a guitar player. For some reason my playing feels tighter and cleaner than ever before, and changing time signatures is now a breeze... I don't know anyone else on the web that can really break it down like you can man. I haven't even watched this video yet, but I'm sure it won't disappoint.

  • have you thought of doing free skype lessons? that would be cool!

  • The only complaint I have is that your guitar tone isn't working for the leads. It's really piercing (in a bad way) on those higher notes. Chuck some more mids and bass in there and cut the presence some and you'll have a much clearer, less painful lead tone.

Other than that, really good video.

  • is that an alex gregory schecter

  • Should be ala The Human Abstract
