The Chinese language is renowned to be the hardest in the world with more then 50000 characters and its four tones. Learning to communicate can therefore be perceived as a challenge, but once overcome, will make your day-to-day experience of Shanghai much more enjoyable. Indeed, it has become increasingly popular among expat residents to learn the basic 3000 characters needed to read the newspaper and impress the locals. Furthermore, Pinyin, the standard system using the Latin alphabet to represent the pronounced sounds, makes learning simple phrases and numbers much easier. However, English, as the language of business in Shanghai, is also understood and spoken fairly well by Chinese in most expat areas.
