One of the great songs about James Connolly, sung here by Derry native Helen Quigley, recorded live at The Bogside Inn in Derry circa 1971/1972. Helen was a fine singer, as evident here, and a well known member of the Republican Socialist community in Derry. She was also the mother of young Caroline Quigley who is heard elsewhere on this channel singing "The Bogside Man" and in the chorus on "The Lid of Me Granny's Bin".
These live recordings were made at a special concert organised by the Official Republican Movement as part of a documentary film project called "NO GO!". The soundtrack was briefly relased as an album by a major record label in the USA, but was pulled from circulation, as was the film, as they were considered too radical and supportive of "terrorism".

  • He is scottish :)

  • @ranbrent Very true, and a good point to remember, as it is often overlooked. James Connolly was born in Edinburgh to Irish parents from County Monaghan. Connolly left Scotland as a yount teenager, and spent most of his life in Ireland and the USA.

  • is this the ex mayor of Derry ?

  • @Derektrotter08 No. That Helen Quigley is SDLP. This Helen was with Offician SInn Fein and later the IRSP. They are about the same age however, and even resemble each other physically just a wee bit.

  • Well yis can waffle all yis want about names, but the bottom line is she recorded this song under the name of HELEN QUIGLEY, so that is her name as far as this recording is concerned.

  • The person singing this is called 'Helen Brady' and not 'Quigley'.

  • Well, you're kinda right. Quigley was her maiden name, and the name under which she recorded this song on the great album called "No Go!".
