These were 5" guns (see Wiki 5"/38 caliber gun), and were on many Destroyers. The projectile weighed about 55 pounds. We were the first ship in the US Navy to fire 5” RAP (Rocket Assisted Projectile) rounds in actual combat. Light Cruisers had 6” guns, heavy Cruisers 8” guns, and the USS New Jersey, the only battleship in commission for Vietnam, had 3 turrets with 3 16” guns in each turret; along with 10, twin 5”x38 gun mounts, five on each side.
