Since the turntable was not hooked up to an amp, how do you monitor the sound? I'm assuming it plays through the computer speakers. Is that right?

You forgot a little detail, most turntables don't have a phono pre amp built in, so before connecting it to your computer u have to buy a pre amp with a RIAA specification if u expect to get decent audio.
