The most powerful of western basses with the darkest timbre. Along with the most fluid legato and natural beauty of ANY singer I ever heard.

  • I feel just like harryfaber about this great song and its great singer that my sick soul wants to be healed...

  • I listen to this whenever I want my sin sick soul healing.

  • I've made 5 presentations now - all well received. I've got old people singing - they remember him well.

JWs offered me their latest leaflet & I noticed an article on "Balm of Gilead." Only last week I had played that song at a respite centre & got them singing along with him.

The JWs hadn't heard of Paul Robeson, even though Hounslow took his name for their theatre. I gave them a resume of his life story & sang them the spiritual.

I try to get JWs to listen. This was special!

  • Just so incredibly true, simple, and powerful. So heartfelt! And you can just imagine that Mr. Robeson could sing words like "Sometimes I feel discouraged" with real empathy and sentiment. Impossible to imagine anyone singing this song any better.

  • My presentation was well received - after all Hounslow has named its theatre after Paul Robeson & I hope to be repeating it for others.

  • I'm preparing a presentation of Paul & his songs for the Hounslow "Older Peoples' Festival" in June. I've got 2 hours to fill. Sheer pleasure - but how could "the Land of the Free" totally reject such a man?

This song will be one of them.

  • Thank you for posting.

I have this song on LP but I cannot play it anymore.
