I just got a nice TC-540 from the AWA spring meet complete with both factory mikes, AC cord and jacks in the cubby. Your speaker grilles are different than mine (Mine are the full bright mesh). The local library has the Sams photofact manual for it (TR-52), so I will be copying that for reference. If the speed is too fast, look for a slipping or raised pinch roller where it feeds the tape through past the heads. For muted or noisy channels, try cleaning the record/playback switch.
i hopw u can possible answer my question. i just got a sony tc-540 and everything works just for some reason it seems to be stuck in fast forward. i've had in the proper speed for the tape and its just fast fowrads the thing so any help u can give would be nice.
I have this same unit! I got it from E-Bay. It plays and records fine, but the left channel main amp needs an new transistor. It is fine with line out. This is an awesome and heavy machine. Mine also starts up slowly like yours does. Probably needs a new drive idler (mine is old and inflexible.) Thanks for the video.
It runs too slow from the start. But if I press a fingernail from above - the opposite direction as the pinch roller - it accelerates to allmost the right speed. By watching the stroboscobe effect in the fan on the backside I can see that the motor doesn't loose speed when the machine is playing. But the bearing is so worn that you can see clearly that nothing is parallel anymore.

Funny, I've always been a sucker for Sony products as they've always exceeded my expectations. Built to last and made in Japan!
