Vagina Monologues - Lebanon

A play about pre-menstrual syndrome, vaginas and tampons may not seem like an obvious hit in the Middle East. But Beirut's version of 'The Vagina Monologues' is pulling in the crowds.

"They laughed and said 'not in a hundred years will this get passed the censors'", recalls director Lina Khoury, describing her friends' reaction to the Vagina Monologues. Not only was the play approved, it's had a life changing affect on its audience. One woman broke off an arranged marriage after seeing it.

We "whores" who put on this play around the world, it's horrible that we use it to raise money to help women and girls escape violence is that right? are we whores for going to New Orleans this year with Eve Ensler, the playwright, and helping people who were displaced to return home to a loving environment instead of one of violence and apathy? these women, and all who perform the play in unwelcoming environments throughout the world, are amazing and i wish them much success in the future.

@afadda I am a man and i have to agree with you sister.. believe women are more intelligent and they have better ways to make their point to the world rather then becoming every mans desire. And may i point that every arrange marriage is not done forcefully...sometimes i feel that people make the wrong use of this word. There is a difference between forced marriage and arranged marriage. Funny even a man can get to be force to marry someone...i bet many have not heard that.

@afadda Really? Is that really how men in the east see women? If that is true then they are the ones with the problem and women should just ignore it and wear what they like. These women were not using their bodies at all, merely wearing a low cut dress. Even if they were then they are free to do as they want to... I personally don't use my body to gain anything but I don't think it's a problem if other women feel they need to - it's up to them
