Stan Brakhage was one of the leading filmmakers in the American Avant-garde. In his lifetime he had made over 300 films. His catalog mainly consists of non-narrative experimental and abstract, ranging in length from 3 seconds to 3 hours. He pioneered techniques such as eccentric editing schemes, rhythmic camera movement, to scratching or painting directly on celluloid to create erratic rapidly moving textures. His influence can be seen in many commercial film and video work from music videos to advertisements. Most notably you can see his techniques in the opening title sequence for the movie Se7en directed by David Fincher.
A sample of his work is available in a two volume set released by the Criterion Collection.
@KnoxEsque85 I've been working on ones for Orson Welles's "The Trial" and Teinosuke Kinugasa's "A Page of Madness."
