Guest Teacher: Dave Sconda (Scroll down for the transcript.)
Have you seen Part 1? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b77d7ebmkmQ
Key words & expressions:
work style, work ethic, work ethics, proactive, fall into the trap of (doing something)
Series objective:
This series will help those preparing to use English in the workplace as well as those already in the workforce. This is NOT traditional Business English (negotiating, presenting, interviewing, etc.) The lessons in this series will help learners gain confidence in talking about work and work-related matters.
Target skills of series: listening, speaking, and vocabulary.
Levels: intermediate to advanced.
NOTE: I'm very sorry to announce as of January 2012 links to EnglishCafe will no longer be active due to the site closing. I was very lucky to be a part of that online community while it lasted. I'm also sorry for the loss of additional materials for learners.
TEACHERS: A related blog post is on WordPress. See key #4 (work ethics handout).

TRANSCRIPT OF DAVE'S TALK:
Work ethic. Have you heard of this before? This is an important thing to think about. What are your ethics? Do you maintain your work ethics? If not, why do they change? And if they do change, is it justified? Watch yourself and don't fall into the trap of being negative at work...of doing less than your best.
Work style. One of the things I've learned from the many mentors I've had is this: self-motivation. Proactive. It's important that you find a way to motivate yourself. If you wait for other people to tell you what to do all the time, it's going to be difficult to rise to the top. Be proactive. What does that mean? It means take the initiative. Make things happen on your own. Don't wait for someone else to tell you what to do. Do more than asked, and do it with a positive attitude. Say, "Hey, it was my pleasure. What's next?" That's the employee we want to have in our companies. That's the employee we want to promote. That's the employee that becomes the entrepreneur -- the one who makes things happen on their own.
So if I could leave with a final note that I want you to think about, I want you to think about this. Be proactive. Make it happen yourself, do more than asked, and do it with a positive attitude. That's something I've learned. All I ask for you to think about it and think about how you might be able to do that in your own life if you're not doing it already.
