Check out my new Okinawa History website with lots of photos and postcards at http://www.rememberingokinawa.com/ NAMINOUE SHRINE IN NAHA OKINAWA, RYUKYU ISLANDS. PHOTOS FROM 1945 TO 1958.
I was there in the years 70 and 71. It was the best time I had in the army. I worked on a LCM on the Island of Okino-Erabu Shima. But I lived in naminoue.
BC Street is still there but it is not nor ever will be the street I remember from 61 and 62. Did a 5 day reunion there 2 yrs ago with three other Marines I served with. Been there 6 times in the last 4 years trying to find out what ever happened to Hideko, the girl I was supposed to marry.r
Great video! I live in Okinawa and have for some 21 years over 4 tours. Just to let you know the meaning of the word; Nami no ue , Nami=Wave, No (a possesive) Ue, on top of or above, so Naminoue=Above the wave. You pronounce it the American way with four syllables, , (Nah me new "e"), however the pronunciation (In Japanese) is five syllables, Nah me no oo eh. This area is one long forgotten by "GI's", however Kinville and BC street are still there! (Or so I've been told) ;-)
Hi Donn, I had to go back and re-vist your video again and it is good. I have to invite you my Facebook, Got Ronnie there so your next. Had to post some stars and get back to work. Bob
I showed this to my Dad, and he said he had this on reel to reel player. It brought a tear to him to listen this. Thank you very much. My Mom is from OKINAWA. on the south end.
Actually you might be mixing up some of the places. All the photos in my video are of the torii gate entrance to Naminoue Shrine near the Naha port. No one jumped off the cliffs there, best you could do at Naminoue is perhaps break a leg. Suicide cliff is on the southeast coast about 10 miles or so from Naminoue. During WWII there was nothing at suicide cliff but high cliffs and caves. Your torii shoulder patch represented Okinawa the gateway to Japan. Worn by US GIs from 1950 to 1972.

Hi Donn,
Just a quick note to let you know I've really enjoyed both of your videos and hope that you will post more soon!
I am a relative newcomer to the wonderful island of Okinawa, so glimpses like this into how it once was are much appreciated.
Thank you once again!

Donn: You do good work (when you work). You need to upload more photos about early Okinawa.

So sorry, I believe I am. It is like an Urban Legend in Oki and I have fallen prey to it.
Thanks again for posting.
I love the song and I still love my memoreis of Okinawa.
