While he was running that program his role was to make things mentally tough for those taking it (he had the role of being the enforcer). Any perceived harshness was part of the role. On top of that, nowadays, he runs his dojo quite soft-handedly (perhaps in reaction to the harshness he received and dished out while in Japan). If you're ever in Vancouver, ask to visit his dojo to train. He's quite friendly & welcoming! :)
