The MagicJack is a small USB device which plugs into your computer with an Internet connection. A standard telephone (corded/less) plugs into the magicJack. With this device, you can make and receive free local and long distance calls, anywhere in the United States and Canada for only $19.95 a YEAR! You can buy the magicJack at a local retail store for around $40 and this pays for your first year of service. No credit card information is required until it is time to renew after your first year is up. You simply plug the magicJack into an available USB port on your PC or Mac (I recommend plugging it into the back, using the included extension cord to make things look neat around the front of the computer), start the software by clicking on the launch link that pops up after driver installation, and you can make 30 minutes worth of test calls before registration is required. Registering the magicJack is very simple. This is where you get your own phone number. (As of June 2011, existing phone numbers can now be ported (transferred) to magicJack through the MJ user account page, however the feature is still in beta stage). In this review, I test the MJ on a decent computer, then run it on a weak machine to show you exactly why there are mixed reviews of the device. I cannot stress it enough - Your COMPUTER'S PERFORMANCE along with your internet connection judges how the magicJack will perform. Running it on a system with a dual core CPU and a non-basic cable or DSL connection should yield great results. However, if you choose to run MJ on an old weak 2002 compliant machine or an Atom-based netbook, and/or have a poor broadband connection(basic DSL or cable, or a satellite based connection), it will sound like a cell phone in a poor service area, unless the given computer is ONLY USED for running a MJ. For the price, you can't beat it. It's a price that Vonage, Time Warner Cable, and AT&T will never be able to match.

  • At&t is not unlimited. 150 month cap. I use 5 or 6 GB a day or more times that by 30 days and that's 150 GB right there. Netflix streaming device or watching a you tube video you will use about 10 GB a day plus all the Streaming the internet.I'm switching. as of tomorrow

  • @camboy1132 That limit of 150GB is still much better than what Verizon Mobile will cap you on. While people like me can consume that much really quick, 150GB / month is plenty for many average joes, even with the use of a magicJack.

  • I need help!! I install it, no errors everything was but

When i plug it in, It dont make no calls!! Please help me!

  • @Toxic581 Does the software launch when you log on to Windows? Is the phone plugged up properly?

  • @CubeComputerChannel

  • @Toxic581 So you're saying that you cannot register it? Is it asking you to register in the left panel of the softphone? If so, click on the ad to begin registration.

  • @CubeComputerChannel

Its not telling me anything! I can't find it, I'll work it on it, or i just pm you

  • Great job on your review.

See a lot of reviews going back to 2008 that trash MagicJack. Can't help but wonder how the technology is doing years later.

Totally get the point that if you own outdated crap computer then that alone is gonna ensure a bad experience.

Verizon is happy to charge either .47 cents/min over my 450 mins or $20/mo more to got to 900 mins. Just looking for a better cost option.
