The Chevy Corvair, an inexpensive, fuel conscious, small American car from the '60s, when the huge gas guzzlers were still the rule. It was abruptly killed by Ralph Nader, and the controversy continues to this day about whether or not he was paid.

We had one of the Corvair Vans, and despite all it went through, it never randomly blew up on us. Though the day the transmission went out and Mom ended up driving backwards home was pretty cool.

"They may be unsafe at some speed; I've only been to 170 mph." Tom Keosababian, Bonneville speed record holder.

This is a promo film for the Corvair's debut, in which they show the vehicle's handling and paces. It does very well, and the pseudo demolition derby towards the end really makes me question Nader.

But I've been questioning Nader since the time I asked my Dad "Who holds M&Ms that long?" after watching Nader's old tv show!

And speaking of a much maligned and misunderstood product... The Realistic Concertmate MG-1. Yes, it is a real Moog. Yes, it is polyphonic.

It is featured along with its descendant, the Moog Voyager Electric Blue, and its 'grandparent', the Hammond S-6 Chord Organ, in the accompanying music, "Round".

For we proud few who snagged up the MG-1 at garage sales for about 20-30 bucks and learned to understand the various quirks of the machine, here is music to neener at the people who will have to shell out over 400 bucks to pick up one nowadays with.

For those who are counting, the MG-1 and S-6 chase each other in the round, the Eurorack holds the bottom, and the gratuitous filter wanking is done on the Voyager.

Question not just authority, but those who purport to be against authority, is the lesson here today.

  • The Corvair was a great car, outhandling most cars in it's cetegory.

Nader was just a bad driver.

  • THEY WENT JAP

  • Thanks... brings back many memories! My father was a gear head when he was young and had many years on Nader. He was very picky about his cars, knew them very well and had a burgundy Corvair that never had a problem. I'd love to have a white w/white rag top! Maybe someday...

  • I've always liked the overall body styling of the early Corvairs better than the later model Corvairs. From the waist down, it's more attractive than later Vairs. From the roof to waist, I find the Later Corvairs to look more attractive. I do like the wrap around rear window of the early Corvair sedan. Nice!
