think of it like making pizza. you can go out and pay $15 to $20 for something that is made of flour, water, tomato sauce and cheese; or you can learn how to make them yourself with much saving, as well as a sense of accomplishment...

That is really cool that you made it, if you are really into the kalimba (or mbira) i'm not completely sure what the difference is. I'd go buy one though so you could get really good at it :)

@thesilenceofduchamp Plus my homemade pizzas are better than anything you can buy!

How neccessary is the soundhole? I think it'd be cool to make a slightly bigger one, maybe 2 or 3 octaves, tuned to an akebono or pentatonic scale.

OMG, giving that you made it yourself, it has AMAZING sound!

That is nice work and anyone who said different just wishes they were as cool as you. Keep up imagination : )

that is sweetly done

Sounds great! Do you have instructions for how to make this? I need to make something similar in my physics class. :)

Except the pizza analogy doesn't work because pizza parlors have really hot ovens that make the crust crispy and delicious.
i called it a prototype mostly because i had never made one before, and i was going to run a workshop for 20 kids, with each kid making one within the timeframe of one hour. i posted the videos so the camp i was going to do it for could see i was serious. i wound up using cigar boxes, grounding bars, and street sweeper tines, and everyone took one home. i would have worked with tuning them and doing performances if i had more time.
