Two White Powder Package Explosions In Maryland Government Buildings

A state police spokesman says packages sent to two state buildings created a small flash of fire, smoke and an odor when they were opened, but did not cause any serious injuries.

State officials initially said the packages exploded, but later said there were no blasts.

Derek Valcourt reports fire officials initially responded to a report of an explosion in Hanover at the Department of Transportation headquarters.

Officials say the incident happened in the 7200-block of Corporate Center Drive around 1 p.m. Thursday. The package under investigation was addressed to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation.

The building has been evacuated. Buses have been brought in to help employees stay warm as they wait to get inside the building.

Several people were transported to the hospital as a precaution, but their injuries are believed to be minor.
