Las Madres "The Mothers" is a public art installation in Tucson, Arizona. Each sculpture represents 1,000 men, women and children who have died crossing the Sonoran desert to find work in the US. Sculptures are made from clothing left in the desert by crossers, as well as desert plants. They represent all the mothers who have lost their children while going "El Norte". Created by artist Valarie James, who began finding left clothing in the wash near her home.
This is a lovely, painful and important tribute to those who dare to cross the border in search of not-a-better life, but rather "a life." We cannot know, nor can we imagine the desperation that drives these people. But we can respect it.
Please pass this on and remind everyone you know that "a human being cannot be illegal." Our gardners, housekeepers, fieldhands, cooks are not "illegals," they are economic and political refugees.

Valarie James, Antonia Gallegos and others from the Las Madres Project have reached into the heart of the tragedy of border crossers in our beautiful, but fierce, desert. Their art speaks for those without voices, and calls to all of us.
