Steve Brant on Developing A Quality Journalism Industry

My input into the http://www.Newshare.org workshop on the future of journalism held on Sept 12, 2009 in Amherst, MA. I spoke on how the industry needs to cover both the constructive and destructive activities humanity engages in, not primarily the destructive activities as occurs today. An by "constructive", I referred to the innovative, solution developing research of organizations like the Rocky Mountain Institute ( http://www.rmi.org ), with its project to "green" the Empire State Building ( http://www.rmi.org/sitepages/pid589.php )

During my presentation, I played excerpts from the CBS Evening News announcement of the death of Walter Cronkite ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkrABAfX2kI ) and of Pres. Obama's speech at the Walter Cronkite memorial on Sept 9, 2009 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xefSPPOKE8 )

Walter Cronkit's journalistic standards - including his commitment to covering the BEST that humanity is capable of doing, not just the worst - have a lot to teach the journalistic industry of today.

My participation in the Newshare workshop was part of my work to develop an initiative that will champion the USA having a High Quality Journalism Industry initiative, similar to the quality manufacturing revolution that took place in America starting in the late 1970's (see http://www.quality.nist.gov and http://www.asq.org )
