THE SLEEVE NOTES FROM THE SINGLE "...As I was writing this song one Sunday, I imagined myself floating into space and looking down at my own body. I was imagining myself dying. Morbidly obsessed with these thoughts, I wrote this song about death. The next day I was told that Guy (Burchett), our 17 year-old messenger boy, had been tragically killed on his motorcycle the day before. Guy died on the day I wrote this song."
The song was originally entitled a Song for Guy the Gorilla. This was written as a tribute to him by his good friend Elton John after the famous London Zoo attraction had passed away earlier that year. They had considered running old video footage of Guy performing in his cage but Elton insisted it would be too upsetting for him.
This sounds like apeshit to me! I think this was basically an improvisation/jam session which worked out. Thank God Elton didn´t ask Bernie Taupin or the other one (Tim Rice?) whose name I´ve forgotten to write any of their pathetic lyrics or we might have had gems like "Sat on the roof and kicked off the moss Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross". Having said that, Elton´s own lyrics are pretty dire. Great tune though! My lyrics: "Guy guy love Guy guy happiness" etc
isn't it: "life is a different thing, is a different thing, is a different thing" ????...written for a young man named guy who was doing some errand work for elton and his musicians during the making of "a single man" ??? am i wrong? look at his lips and listen, i think it's the way i wrote
