PRISTINA, Serbia (Reuters) - Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Sunday, closing a long chapter in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia.

The move provoked instant condemnation from Serbia.

The proclamation was made by leaders of Kosovo's 90 percent ethnic Albanian majority, including former guerrillas who fought the forces of late Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic in a 1998-99 war which claimed about 10,000 civilian lives.

"We, the democratically elected leaders of our people, hereby declare Kosovo to be an independent and sovereign state. This declaration reflects the will of our people," said Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

Milosevic revoked Kosovo's autonomy in 1989, at the outset of his ruinous decade of Serbian ultra-nationalism and war.

Serb police crushed the Kosovo Albanians' first declaration of independence in 1990. But on Sunday, there was nothing Serbia could do to prevent the move, which has the backing of major European Union powers and the United States.

All 109 deputies present at the session in the capital Pristina voted in favor with a show of hands. Eleven deputies from ethnic minorities, including Serbs, were absent.

Kosovo is "an independent, sovereign and democratic state", parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi declared after the vote. A new flag, with the outline of Kosovo in yellow on a blue background under six stars, was carried into parliament

They are not Gypsies in fact they are Kosovans or Albanians, Serbs, Turks etc. Kosovo has done much more develop in 3 years of independence than Bosnia-Herzegovina in 10-15 yrs or whatever.
