A Han Chinese music student visited the town of Kangding, then the capital of Xikang province (today's western Sichuan), in the 1940s to entertain a group of local Tibetan soldiers who were shipping out with the Kuomintang Army to fight Japanese in Burma. He composed this song based on local Tibetan music. Today, this song is the most popular love song in China.

BETLEGEUSE: It's suppose to resemble Tibetan custome.

Aside from the traditional style (though somewhat modernized), I believe since this dance was probably first choreographed for a college or professional dance competition, fans are just copying it either as an act of admiration or challenge for themselves? Costume-wise I'm guessing admiration...

I have seen a few variants of this beautiful song and dance. But could somebody tell me, is the costume always very similar, wide brimmed hats and long skirts, is that part of the tradition or lack of imagination

The original song is named "康定情歌". You can translate it as "A romantic song in Kangding". It was originally a folk song passed by generations among Tibetan people who live in a county named Kangding in Sichuan province in the southwest part of China. In the middle of last century, a Han song writer collected pieces of the song, made some modifications, and wrote new lyrics in Madelin. After that, this beautiful song became really famous all over China.!
