my jetta coupe sounded just like that , it had 300,xxx miles on it and the odometer was broke. I sold it now its a 2.0 16v running digi and mega squirt.

it's pretty normal for the older mk2s. It's not something that's supposed to happen but it is common and usually doesn't do much harm. there are actually two different kinds of knocks from these cars. mine has both. one of them is pretty normal for its age and the other is the "ticking" which is because of the lifters crapping out.
