  • Well, the overhand should only ever be used to join ropes in the case of abseiling, where if you're getting forces anywhere close to this you're doing something wrong enough to get killed anyway. The tails should be bloody long of course, the BMC guideline is 60cm or more. A double fisherman's knot would be more foolproof but it does tend to get stuck in cracks often, so I guess it depends on the terrain you're on and whether you're gonna have to pull the rope through.
