This video is the first part of three that demonstrates how easy it is configure a Linux machine for serving files as Windows Shares via Samba. The demo will show how to manage file systems and samba shares via Webmin, a web GUI for Linux. It also shows the Windows XP client connecting to file shares and editing files from within Windows.
Part 1 concentrates on getting a USB flash drive mounted into the system.
Part 2 gets into sharing the flash drive to Windows and setting up an drive for NTFS
Part 3 goes into mounting the NTFS partition and sharing it via samba

Portions of the video still use the command line to get certain tasks done. Sorry, Windows lovers...

  • what's the name of the song?

  • @hgratp The tune in part 1 is called "Eternal Light" by MIcrowave Prince. Check out Trancemaster 11, CD2 track2.

The track in part 2 of the tut is called "Schoeneberg" by Marmion, found on "Logic Trance 2" CD2, track 4.

There are two more tracks that I can't remember right now where I pulled them from. I mixed the together for the video...

  • Ok, so the videos aren't the best tutorials out there. This was pretty much my first attempt and a video demonstration. That's why it is long and convoluted. At the same time, I'd like to offer an explanation as to why so long and why Webmin.

I made these three videos for a friend who wanted a cheap SAN-style device for sharing files. He's also doesn't know Linux and is overall not good at networking. I had to show how to navigate Webmin and also the shell to get where he wanted to get.

  • Very confusing. You're wandering in and out of menues terminal window, and sometimes I think you're as clueless as I as to what it you're doing.

Either text or speach would have helped.

  • @Toljnima2010 - Yes, I had no script and was making the video up as I went on. I also did this at my work place with no microphone available. So yes, it shows!

  • One could argue that I spent too much time on this where in reality I could have set this up in a minute. I was trying to make certain points here and show how the settings relate to each other. Also, these three videos were created specifically with Webmin in mind as I had planned on preparing a file-sharing workstation without any keyboard mouse and monitor for somebody who doesn't want to deal with settings files. Sort of like a NAS device.

  • lol easy? cmon....you stupid linx

  • Right, you need 3 parts to show how "simple" it is!? The samba server configuration tools are TRASH! All of them. Manually editing smb.conf , adding users and printers is tedious. SWAT is useless. They should really look at Apple's samba server configuration GUI. That one is simple and powerful.
