We all find ways to escape the stresses of twenty-first century life. While most people find solace in foreign holidays, exercise or a large glass of wine, some people have found a very different survival strategy: they are retreating into the past.

Sally Hewitt's First Cut film takes a step back in time to meet four women who are desperate to be old-fashioned housewives.

@stlgtrace These people are just one type of women living an interesting lifestyle. I think it's wrong to say that acting a certain way makes someone "more of a woman/man" or "less of a woman/man".

Interesting video but if you want to live like these people you don't have to decorate your home with 40s furniture just come to live in Hungary or any other ex-soviet Eastern European country. Because of the effects of Communism, time stopped here and everything looks like a rundown version of 1940s USA, people above 30 have "vintage values" for sure, and wages are pretty low, so you won't fall into the temptation of buying a truckload of clothes! But I prefer living here to the decadent West!

This is SO COOL. I'm obsessed with the 40s, but don't live its lifestyle or anything like these women do. I own a couple dresses, a record player and a lot of records, but thats about it. I love to escape while home and pretend i'm back in that time, it's a nice way to escape and forget about your troubles. So I do understand these women in that aspect.

@toughcrowd94 Yes I agree, at least part of the nostalgia most (not all) people have who have the 'vintage bug', is very romantic.

A romanticized view of the past, few actually think everything was better then.

But even people like me who live in more realistic 1930s way (I hope) often realise that even knowing all the bad sides, the past still has a LOT of good sides.

Longing for the past while you know the bad sides, makes the longing only stronger ;)

@nederland4045 I do agree with you. I didn't mean EVERYONE who lives like this, but some of them, yes. I act some what similarly to the people in this video; my bedroom looks like a time warp! And quite frankly I think the style of dressing is much nicer too. I also think certain values and morals were there that aren't today, but I believe that some people living like this are trying to live in a dream world that never actually existed. I could be wrong, but that's just what I think.

@xxhoundessxx I too have a retro lifestyle, but am I more withdrawn from the world then modern people who rush home after work (with their Ipod so they don't hear other people) and then close door and curtains so they can watch tv for the rest of the evening?

Everyone withdraws from the world in one way or another.

And what is so great about the world to not withdraw from?

I often don't know what date it is, that happens when you don't have a 5 day workweek.
