I lived in Beijing as an expatriate and studied Mandarin for years, but I always found it irksome that I could travel to some corner of China and be completely at a communicative loss if I were to travel to Hong Kong.
I've always envied my parents, who grew up in the hotpot that is Singapore. They grew up speaking Mandarin, Hokkien (Fujian), Hakka, Teochew (Chaozhou), Cantonese and god knows how many other dialects.
