I'm looking at this boat here, the Wenonah Spirit II, Bell Canoe Works Northwind AND your very own Prospector 17! I will be going out with it for as little as 3 days, for as much as 10 days in the future. When I go backpacking I bring everything plus the kitchen sink, and I want to bring even more luxuries while canoe camping! Tell me what canoe I should buy and why!

I'm purchasing my first canoe, for the purpose of wilderness exploration and camping. I can't afford composites and I like the idea of something that can take a little more abuse anyway. (continued)

This is going to be a tough choice as they are all great canoes. You really cant go wrong. As for the Spirit II, our Prospector is a little deeper and has a little more rocker. This means the Prospector will have a higher carrying capacity and it will turn a little better.

As for the Northwind, it is longer and it has a bit more rocker, although rocker is hard to see from the picture on their website. I would wager the performance of the Northwind and Prospector would be very similar. I would be a little concerned about a 60lb ABS canoe at 17.5 feet. This could be a thinner ABS layup which could result in unwanted flex or oil canning.

As for our Prospector I can tell you it is going to offer you the durability you need and it has enough capacity to haul everything you want to bring on an interior trip. It is a classic canoe design borrowed from the venerable Chestnut Canoe Company and has been the go-to canoe for thousands of wilderness trippers. You wont be disappointed. Hope this helps.
