On March 23, 1971, the Government of Sierra Leone survived a military coup. Historians suggest that Prime Minister Siaka P. Stevens knew of the plan before it went into action against him.
Coup organizer, Army Commander John Amadu Bangura, was arrested while two assassination attempts took place against Stevens.
Bangura was executed for treason in Freetown after the failed assault.
The following broadcasts were recorded live from Radio Sierra Leone beginning with John Bangura's coup announcement on March 23, 1971.
These radio announcements were recorded by Ted W. Cox on a cassette tape recorder in his home in Bo Town, Sierra Leone, in 1971.
