  • 2) I think Beyoncé chose to hit the G5 and G#5 in head voice/falsetto. She can hit brief G5s and G#5s in mixed voice, she did it in a few songs, and we're talking about a studio recording, not a live performance. I don't know why, but she might have just disliked how that word sounded at that height, because although she can hit the notes they're at the top of her full voice range and she doesn't like to screech.

  • @workitout80 Precisely! Wow...I think we are all on the same page today; per the discussion below. Excellent insight!!

  • Great video. I love every bit of what you said, and I do understand what you mean by her using falsetto when she sings at Eb5 and E, rather than full chest belt but as you said because the song itself so unique to mainstream entertainment that her doing that gives it enough of a pop feel to give people's ears the ability to handle hearing the song. That's how it works. At least for this song. But yes, it would have been more powerful the way you explain your pov. Again, great video.

  • @FemaleVocalLover1975 Thanks so much! And you are right. I am most certain she scaled it back due to the acceptable pop formulas that have worked for decades. A more esoteric genre would have appreciated it, but money making is in the masses; great feedback! ;-)

  • So why are we 'critiquing' Beyonce so much when she's the only one in mainstream who is, actually, who can sing in this style? :|

  • @Jayy630 Hey! Thanks so much for your feedback. This session is not a "bad critique" on Beyonce. In my work on the Celebrity Vocal Tips, I strip songs down so we can see everything. The only "constructive critique" I gave Beyonce was on the starting key she chose to maximize her full-vocal-forte moments. Other than that, I'm glad and even thankful that she's one of the few who are aware and willing to perform theory and seldom-used techniques. =)

  • It's the best thing on that CD. It could have been the song of the summer. Why it wasn't the first single, I don't understand. I've played it about 400 times.

Her mix (you refer to it as false) is perfectly blended to my ear. For me, it holds up the way a full belt would.

  • @DreamloverLambi1 I totally agree! I thought she killed it at the VMA's. She had "baby" power that night....(laugh/smile)! =)

  • Love the comments. Clearly people here have some vocal knowledge

  • Great video, I immediately told the people the song had a gospel vibe and structure as I heard it, but I don't think I agree with the critique, for two reasons:

    1) I believe Bee wanted her voice to sound quite high pitched in the song, because it was clearly mainly a tribute to the young Michael Jackson, the Jackson5 MJ. Singing lower she would have sounded a lot deeper.

  • Also, I have other Bey songs from the album "4" that I want you to teach on technique if you have the chance: I Care and End of Time.

  • What exactly is "full voice"?
