@GirlLuvsMuscles Thanks. I watched the DVD commentary by Visconti and the Pennebaker guy and they talked about how Bowie came up with Ziggy. It was interesting at first, but then they started talking about building studios and blah blah so I just tuned out and stared at Bowie for the rest of it... hehe

The character Ziggy came from the rocker Vince Taylor who proclaimed himself 'Mathew' on stage

Davie Jones, David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust! No monkeys!! What 'music' do you people listen to?
-
Yes, definately Spider Monkeys!
-
LOLOL the spider monkeys!!! Its Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from mars.

I think the name was taken from Iggy and The Lonesome Stardust Cowboy (or something like that), who was a minor star in the london scene until he went mad and proclaimed himself Jesus Christ on stage. Bowie was most likely trying to re-invent himself the way the media talks about Madonna these days and create a mask to hide behind. Bowie was also effected by his brothers mental illness and this is increasingly evident in his career from here on in.
