Entry from: Munich, Germany
Entry Title: "Kristkindlmarkt"

Entry:

"Visiting Munich is like going on holiday to your home town. It feels very familiar and almost like a quick visit where you don't have to think of an itinerary. So, after telling (okay asking in a telling type manner) my boss if I could leave early, then it was off to Gatwick for the umpteenth time this year. I swear it's like a daily commute to Gatwick it seems so normal. Anyway, Friday night and a trip to Munich via Aer lingus for a measly £40 or so for the Xmas markets is not to be sneered at.

The forecast was for heavy snow which just added to the excitement of Christkindlmarkt. When we arrived, there was unfortunately no snow. Oh well, it wasn't the end of the world. A journey on the S-Bahn to Hauptbahnof was made a lot quicker due to the fact Heidi made a small comment to our neighbouring passengers about their choice of xmas gift. This comment ensued with a 40 minute conversation about everything from Gluhwein to the royal family, all in German which was testament to the fact that we can both speak a level of German without being paralytic. It was a fun conversation with a couple of middle aged Bavarian couples nonetheless.

The remainder of Friday evening involved checking into the Hotel Theresia, just a stones throw from where I used to live in Theresienstrasse. Suffice to day it was great if not a little strange to emerge from a U-Bahn station that seemed like I was still using on a daily basis. So, on to the first stop which was my ex-local or Stammtisch, Tresznjewskis in Maxvorstadt, a fantastic brasserie which stays open till 3am at the weekends. Some excellent food was followed by a couple of nice and needed Ayinger Helles. We then took a stroll to the local Alter Sempl bar in Schwabing, another chilled but very authentic German bar. A few local beers here helped us get ready for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday mornings awakening found us too late to make breakfast however this was no big deal as it gave me a chance to introduce Heidi to yet another local delicacy, Cafe Schmook for breakfast. A fantastic omelette and coffee set us up for the Gluhweins that were to follow. After walking into town via Konigsplatz and Park Cafe, we decided to climb Alter Peter. This is of course a long and narrow climb but a rewarding view of Marienplatz and the surrounding Alps is what is on offer at the end of it. After the descend from here, Gluhweins were of course the order of the day, in fact several. We went back to the hotel for a siesta before returning to Marienplatz for a few more. This was before we visited the VolksGarten bar for a chilled G n T and a beer. We then met Paul and went for some typical Bavarian food which was unsurprisingly excellent. Suffice to say, several beers later, we were quite tanked!!!! A geat evening helped in part by our very friendly local Bavarien kellerin who seemed to give Heidi some special treatment.

So to Sunday and the last day of our short weekend of Xmas celebrations, at least European style at any rate. It was off to one of the best if not the best Xmas market in Munich for a few Feuerzangenbowle, a great take on Gluhwein except it contains flaming rum which after 2 each, left us both slightly inebriated. So, some more gluhweins, a bratwurst and a trip to Ismanning before boarding our flight was a fitting end to our weekend. Now it is back to a single day of work before we set off on the big one."
