Doug Chabot of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center investigates the avalanche that killed Guy Lacelle. Guy was in a steep gully on non-technical terrain above the climb Silken Falls (120m) when a party above triggered a wind loaded pocket. He was swept approximately 1,000 feet.

  • To be reminded of what can and does go wrong helps to recalibrate our risk perception, and to learn lessons from such incidents helps us to better understand the hazards.

  • Long lIve Guy Lacelle. Thoughts are with Marge and the people that knew him.

  • Were avalanche conditions evaluated for the Hyalite area by the sponsors and organizers of the ice climbing event?
