The 4 monsters were L, Mello, Near and Light. All lying monsters.

L, who poses as a human without any understanding of the human heart

Mello, who eats even though he's never experienced hunger

Near, who studies even though he has no interest in academics

Light, who seeks friendship, even though he does not know how to love

I think this was really well done and I like how L described himself and the others so completely.

I think Mellow and Near Know that L is talking about or referring to them, because of thier facial expressions.
