@chipdog34 Because the violation had nothing to do with any of the players on the team. It had to do with Larry Brown giving money to Vincent Askew, a would-be transfer from Memphis State, for airfare so he could be at the deathbed of his grandmother who raised him. Askew never played a single game for KU or was even enrolled at KU. Didn't matter to the NCAA. They slapped us with three years probation and a ban from the 1989 tourney.
Tubbs coached a terrible game. He only used his bench for six minutes, and that only due to foul trouble. OU had great depth, but in the most important game of the year, the bench was ignored.
Meanwhile, Brown ran players in and out all night. Newton, Pritchard, Piper, Normore, and Harris comined to go 20-for-23! All that, in addition to Manning's 31 points and 18 rebounds.
An irony is that Dave S., easily the least-impressive of OU's starting five, kept the Sooners in the game.
the shame of this is that if they played 100 games total, OU would have won the next 99. I still can't believe they lost this game. But of course, Kansas was found guilty of some violations after this game but for some reason did not have to vacate this win.
Anyone have the CBS intro to the game with Garrison Keillor in the old gym?

This was one of the best teams in college basketball history. 3 1st round draft picks off this Ok team. Tubbs truly had some great teams back then
