Dendra Armour Mycenaean Civilisation

This is the remarkable bronze armour found in a grave at Dendra, near the Mycenaean citadel of Midea and now displayed at Nafplio Museum in the eastern Peloponnese of Greece. The boars' tusk helmet recalls helmets described by Homer in the Iliad. This is of particular interest to students taking Unit CC1 (Entry Code F381) Archaeology of the Classical World in OCRs AS-Level Classical Civilization course.

The Dendra armour is made of hammered bronze sheets to cover the breast, back and shoulders. There were also greaves for the legs and a boar's tusk helmet, as well as at least one wrist-guard. Such armour is referred to on the writing tablets found at Knossos and Pylos. 15th century BC

I don't know why but while reading the Iliad I've always imagined Agamemnon, Achilles, Nestor, Hector, Polidamante and all those guys dressed with the classical breastplate of the 5th century BC.

I recognised this straight away. I am lucky enough to have a copy of WARRIOR IN BRONZE by George Shipway. The illustration on the cover is of a young King Agememnon wearing a near identical suit of armour. I've often wondered if bronze plates would have been hammered to shape. Bronze is a metal that work hardens very quickly and it may have been quicker and easier for the armourer to just cast the sections in bronze and only hammering to make final adjustments and leave a tough finish
