Cobham celebrated the opening of the Blacksburg, Va. site November 9, 2010 with a ribbon-cutting event at a new 50,000 square-foot engineering and manufacturing facility. Cobham Sensor Systems in Blacksburg produces monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) components that are used in defense and aerospace applications including radar, communications and electronic warfare systems.
"The upgrade to this modern facility is a great advancement for our MMIC technology business, and enables Cobham to continue providing key products to our customers" said Andy Humen, vice president of Cobham Sensor Systems. "The location also provides significant opportunities for synergy with nearby Virginia Tech and other technology leaders in the area."
The business relocated from Roanoke, Va. to Blacksburg to upgrade to a more modern facility. In October, requalification of its new facility was accomplished, with the successful completion of key reliability and qualification tests on the MMIC processes and products. The qualification results verify that the company has successfully replicated its proprietary MMIC technology at the Blacksburg site and is prepared to restart volume production of GaAs MMICs for key aerospace and defense programs.
Cobham Sensor Systems Blacksburg is a member of the "NewVa" Corridor Technology Council, which supports technology development in the area. Cobham employees also routinely engage with faculty and students at nearby Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), and recently hosted a meeting of the Virginia Mountain Section IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) at the Cobham facility.
