The BBC's Suvojit Bagchi, who was granted unprecedented access to a Maoist camp in the depths of the Chhattisgarh jungle, describes the rebels' precarious life.
After eight hours of walking in dense forest, in the early evening we entered a narrow, barren stretch of land hemmed in by hillocks.
At the far end stood a few blue and yellow tents.
Somji, one of the men who collected me between a small town in south Chhattisgarh and the thick central Indian forest, picked up speed as we approached.
A tall man standing guard with a rifle flung over his shoulder whistled and people started rushing towards us.
In under a minute, the camp members stood in formation and began singing a welcome song.
Each member in the queue raised their fist to whisper "lal salaam" - "red salute".
Mostly aged between 15 and 30 years old, the men and women in the camp wore rubber sandals, olive green battle fatigues and carried guns of various makes.
India's Maoist rebels say they are fighting for the rights of indigenous tribespeople and the rural poor.
@invincibletruth1776 This is not their country, this is country of exploiters, lackeys of imperialism. Peasants and workers must built own, new better country.

@1966singh Theory of Maoism was successful in practice! Modern technique is limited and isn't solution for all problems.

Misdeeds of Mao Tsetung in building a country that was a drastic failure of egalitarianism in reality aside, Maoism as a way for revolution is a totally different thing. In India it has its own Karma and you shall see it is the most decent revolution in human's history in the most backwardly kept people's walk of life toward their betterment and freemdom

i support their right for equal share, but mao theory is failure in practice,, better to adopt some modern technique to improve life of these people, basically whole life is slavery of karma,,chine is one of them, whole people are being pushed to market economy,,work, sex ,consumption, and work only ,with currency,, bloody circle of dream, greed, brainwashing,,

I don't like the fact these people are fighting their own country men but nonetheless I am proud that they are standing up for their rights, for it is on the brink of impossibility for these marginalized people to achieve any type nondiscriminatory treatment within the legal spectrum. Especially when the middle class is treated like cockroaches in many parts of the country.
