A road trip through Yunnan province would be spectacular, I think. On this bus journey alone, from Dali to Kunming, we've passed through innumerable verdant valleys. The hills are carefully cultivated steps, and beneath those terraces are boundless acres of vegetation sprouting and bursting forth in a sea of shimmering green. Along the way there are also quaint rural villages whose inhabitants tend those majestic fields. I wish to visit those agrarian outposts, to experience their exotic culture and to be a part of five millennia of communal praxis.
Let me not totally kid myself with a blissful reverie, however. These roads are fraught with terrifying dangers, the foremost of which are the lumbering trucks that carry China's hopes and dreams on their backs. Indeed, that we have come uncomfortably close to rear-ending dozens of these unwieldy beasts, but have thankfully avoided any of the roadway calamity for which China is infamous, is a miracle in itself. My seatbelt is fastened.
