Performance of 'Canadee-i-o' trad. arr. Nic Jones from Penguin Eggs. Guitarists, see 'how to' video for tips on how to play this song. www.samcartermusic.co.uk

This video -- in conjunction with my 'how to' video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAOny7J33Lk&feature=related -- is intended to shed light on Nic Jones' arrangement of Canadee-i-o, and is something I've chosen to post online as a guitar teacher as well as a Nic Jones enthusiast.

In contrast, as an artist I perform my own material as well as my own versions of traditional songs. As such, I don't play Nic's arrangements at my own gigs. You can find videos of many of my own songs among my uploaded videos.

  • I was introduced to this beautiful song by Blair Dunlop at a wee session last night, although he uses his own variant tuning. My searching lead me to your post and I'd like to thank you for not only this lovely rendition, but also the 'how to' video.

Two questions if I may: what strings are you using? (my old Simon & Patrick with 11's sounds a bit 'baggy' on the 1st string) and what guitar is that?

  • @AdamBeresfordBrowne Hi Andy, glad you like the video. At the time of making this video I was using Newtone Masterclass strings in a custom gauge - 56, 44, 34, 24, 17, 13. Google them and you'll find their website, they'll make any gauge sets you like. The guitar is a Lowden O25C. Say 'Hi' to Blair for me!

  • @samjohncarter Thanks Sam, but who's Andy? ;)

  • @AdamBeresfordBrowne No idea Derek. ;)

  • Thanks for all the nice comments folks, I'm performing at the Nic Jones Tribute at Sidmouth Folk Week this year, along side Martin Simpson, Jim Moray and Jon Boden.

  • @samjohncarter Nice one Sam, thanks. Nice bunch at Newtone - custom sets ordered. Beaut instrument btw... feel the waves of jovial jealousy! :)

  • Good on you! And yes, In one of his English guitar primers Michael Raven mentioned that Nic Jones played banjo. I think Martin Carthy also mentioned that in an old Sing Out article.

  • This song is nearly 200 years old and you make it sound new born. May it be sung in another 200 years time, too.

  • You sir ... are a god.

  • This is really really good!
