Benedict XVI recalled that the main function of reason is to recognize the principal ethical principals tied to the dignity of a person. He also said that liberty makes sense when one decides to respect them. John of Salisbury was the thread for his catechesis.

BENEDICT XVI
In his celebrated work, the Metalogicon, John teaches that authentic philosophy is by nature communicative: it bears fruit in a message of wisdom which serves the building up of society in truth and goodness.

According to the pope, if John of Salisbury was alive today, he would recognize that the only equitable laws are those that defend the sacredness of human life and that seek solidarity at the national and international level.

Thats why he calls laws in favor of abortion, euthanasia and genetic experimentation, unlawful.

Benedict XVI said that the works of John of Salisbury have not been lost because they explain the collaboration between faith and reason in order to seek the truth. A collaboration that the pope, as a university professor, says is fundamental.
