Yes a normal web cam. Mainly because I could make a movie at 1 frame per second (3/4 of which were thrown out to speed it up). If you have a digital camera that can take a picture every 4 seconds then it'd be ideal for this sort of thing as you could play back at 25FPS and get a 100x speedup. Otherwise you can shoot at any framerate and speed it up with VirtualDub but a long video could create a huge file.
@RJL738 I do know that the sun is a mass of incandescent gas. A gigantic nuclear furnace. Where hydrogen is built into helium At a temperature of millions of degrees. ;)

Wonderful job on the video, many people don't realise that the Sun is more than 1.38 million times the size of the Earth.
