Gas is over $6.50 a gallon in the Dominican Republic, one of our hemispheres poorest nations. Its somewhat ironic that those who have much less than we have, pay much more than we pay. Gas prices are just one indication of a much greater problem. For the past two years, over one hundred missionaries from several parishes in our diocese have been working with a community of Haitian refuges outside the city of Higuey. Columbian Charity Sister Ana Iris, who leads the mission effort, continues to remind those helping her that these are the poorest of the poor in the world. They dont have homes. They dont have food.
